Whenever I think of this soldier who pierced Jesus’ side, I can’t help but wonder what was going through his mind. This wondering moved me to paint him in his moment of agony. He’d just killed an innocent man. Perhaps he has killed and tortured many before. Did his guilt finally catch up with him?
