Beyond the Thorns
Whenever I think of this soldier who pierced Jesus’ side, I can’t help but wonder what was going through his mind. This wondering moved me to paint him in his moment of agony. He’d just killed an innocent man. Perhaps he has killed and tortured many before. Did his guilt finally catch up with him? Was he too tired and burdened to resist the weight of his sin? Was he thinking, “Who is this King of the Jews?” He’d just heard Jesus say “Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.” What does this all mean?
What we believe in life is vital to our success. People need to know there’s hope for a better tomorrow. Jesus said, “Come to me all who are weary and heavily laden, and I will give you rest.” You can rest your burdens at the foot of the cross. And you will be forgiven.
