Banners at the Beach
Nye Beach Banner Project 2020 – Charlie Munroe, “Tiny Bubbles” and “Music and Dining at Nye Beach”
Twelve years ago, a little-known beach enclave, Nye Beach (nestled in Newport, Oregon) decided to enlist local artists to create colorful, two-sided banners to hang around their neighborhood. They hoped to encourage visitors to get out of their cars and “discover Nye Beach” by looking for more banners. The banners are hung from June until October, and are then auctioned off in November to help raise funds for youth arts programs at the Visual Arts Center (located in Nye Beach).
This year, there are four banners hanging in Nye Beach from Mombetsu, Japan, Newport’s sister city, and four of the banners submitted from local artists will be sent to Mombetsu.
Charlie and Maggie both decided to take up this challenge, and their banners will be seen in Nye Beach (or maybe even Mombetsu) this summer. It was great fun, not only dreaming up and painting the banners, but working alongside each other! Go have a look… Nye Beach promises a lovely day spent shopping, dining, and hunting for banners (Oh, and a chance for some sand between your toes)!
Kudos to Veronica Lundell of Jovi (a cool store with furniture, arts, jewelry, and crafts in Nye Beach) for her hard work getting the banners started and keeping them going over the last twelve years!
